Above the village of Tanygrisiau in Meirionnydd is a hidden valley. Described by many as a magical place, it has a history all of its own - a history of rural hardship, one of remoteness and of industrialisation.

Once home to many working class families who gathered there in the boom years of the 19th Century slate-rush, joining a farming community that had lived there for centuries before.

From reputedly as early as the 11th Century to the 1940s it proved a home to many a family and lodger alike. Now only ghosts remain.

Cofio Cwmorthin Remembered was set up in 2010 to take the previous research carried out by Project Leader Mel Thomas into the next stage. An archaeological survey and dig of the oldest dwelling in the cwm was carried out under the supervision of experienced amateur archaeologist Bill Jones. Now the group has applied to the Hertiage Lottery Fund for finance to prevent the buildings in the valley from deteriorating further.
